In recent decades, both societal polarization and the number of close social contacts have measurably increased, particularly from 2008 to 2010. Based on these observations and with a model, Viennese complexity researchers found a connection between these phenomena. According to their study, higher connectivity leads to stronger polarization, as they report in the journal Proceedings of the US National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
